Abstract

The study analyses a set of academic approaches with the aim of formulating a theoretical model for the governance of tourist destinations; these approaches are meta-governance, corporate governance, the relationship between tourist destination management offices and stakeholders, knowledge management, the role of social networks in governance, the theory of evolutionary governance and smart governance. The integrative method is applied to analyse the contents of the academic literature consulted. There is evidence that better governance positively influences the competitiveness and sustainability of tourist destinations. The work provides a tentative theoretical model for the governance of tourist destinations. Among the findings of the study are the identification of the dynamic nature of governance in tourist destinations, the need to reconcile the interests of host communities and tourist companies, the convenience of incorporating technologies to manage governance and the synergy between the theoretical approaches on business conglomerates, social networks and stakeholder management.
